Steerhide
- Steerhide is a heavyweight, durable leather made from the hide of castrated adult male cattle. Compared to cowhide — which can be sourced from male or female cows — steerhide is typically thicker, denser, and more resistant to stretching, offering greater water resistance.
- When new, steerhide can feel stiff and rigid, but with wear it softens, molds to the body, and develops a deep patina. It's substantial, protective feel is perfectly suited to motorcycle jackets and workwear styles.
- Steerhide is usually heavily oiled or waxed during tanning to boost weather resistance. Conditioning isn’t often needed, but if the leather starts to feel dry or lose its sheen, apply a small amount of leather conditioner. Use conditioner sparingly to avoid softening the structure too much, working in with a soft cloth. Buff off any excess conditioner to avoid buildup, which can dull the surface or attract dirt
- To clean, start with a soft brush or dry cloth to remove surface dirt. For tougher grime, use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap — but avoid over-wetting and never soak the leather. If the leather gets wet, blot gently and allow it to naturally dry at room temperature, away from heat sources, then condition if needed to restore moisture.
