Leather Care

Roughout Steerhide

- Roughout leather is made from the flesh side of a full-grain hide, offering the same durability and structure as full-grain leather, but with a textured, suede-like surface. Unlike traditional suede, which is split from the lower layers of the hide, roughout retains the full thickness and strength of the original leather, making it exceptionally tough, long-lasting and low maintanence.

- Its nap has a natural resistance to scuffs and scratches, and it tends to age gracefully, developing a worn-in, matte patina rather than a high shine. Because the grain is on the inside, roughout is less affected by surface wear and doesn’t require polishing — making it ideal for hard-use environments.

- Roughout is typically treated with oils or waxes during tanning, giving it a degree of water and stain resistance. We recommend minimal conditioning — only when the leather begins to feel overly dry or stiff. Use a small amount of conditioner designed for suede or roughout, applied sparingly to preserve the texture. Avoid wax-based products, which can flatten the nap and alter the finish.

- To clean, use a soft brush or suede eraser to remove dirt and refresh the surface. For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth or dedicated suede cleaner. If the leather gets wet, allow it to dry naturally at room temperature, then gently brush the surface to restore the nap. Never use direct heat or a hairdryer.
