Filmed, had to sneak in some IH
-
Hey Folks,
Had the chance to be filmed for our school's recent run of PSA commercials. Had to sneak in some Iron Heart! For context: My wife and I work for a large boarding school in Central Pennsylvania. We run a home of 12 teenage boys and have been at it for about a decade.
Here's a couple stills.
Me pretending to know how to throw a football:
And me pretending to know how to play pingpong, personal daughter my sparring partner:
Still waiting on an interview commercial where I wore the recent UPS UHF, which happens to be a perfect match for our school colors!
Hope you enjoyed!

Congratulations
Thanks Giles! You sent us some extra IH stickers a few years back and I still hand out a couple every year!

@GTPowers Very cool! My wife and I enjoy eating at Houlihan’s when in the Hershey area.

@GTPowers this is really cool man. As a teacher, this type of stuff always moves me. My first teaching job was at a small residential treatment center in the mountains. We held about 10-15 boys transitioning out of juvenile detention centers back into the community and provided therapy and I was their teacher. Loved that job!! I had full creative run of how I designed lessons and activities. We built gardens, went snowboarding, hiking, and worked with our hands on projects.
What’s the learning focus of your school?
-
@John-Galt Shoot me a DM if you're ever in town!
-
@Mizmazzle That sounds like a dream.
I would say our school's focus is Career/SEL based education for underprivileged kids. It's a completely free program. The school covers food, clothes, housing, education needs, etc. The students even have the potential to earn a $95k supplementary scholarship for post secondary.
We've been here long enough to see some really great stuff happen for kids who needed it (and wanted it, because some of them don't). I've got one '23 grad who started pre-med on a full ride to Columbia. He came out of one of the poorest neighborhoods in Baltimore. Another grad, '22, who is wrapping up his second year at Villanova, on a full ride as well. He came from bo-fawk-no-where PA, born into a family of junkies. Calls me dad now, which is hilarious because I'm hardly a decade older than him.
It's just so cool. I really love it! -
@GTPowers Will do - the kiddos live outside Lancaster so we’re in that area monthly and come up Rt743 from Rt283 to hit Houlihan’s for dinner on our way home. Will be in touch.

@GTPowers nice man! Big props to you dude. I really love working with that population. I’m in a high impact, title 1 school at the moment and see a lot of the same issues with my students as you’re describing. When I was at the residential treatment center I felt a lot more empowered to create programs that met those kids’ needs. Public school can be very limiting that way. Keep up the good fight my man!! Love to hear about this project of yours!

@John-Galt You should check out Fresh Market if you're ever swinging through Wed-Sat. Great local foods set up like a smaller Central Market Lancaster!

Hear you there! We came from the Southside of Chicago, where my wife was teaching at a super strict and rigid charter in Englewood. She had zero freedom or room for creativity!
Now MHS provides us the framework and we get to paint the picture.
