IH-634S-A - 21oz Selvedge Denim Straight Cut Jeans (20th Anniversary Edition)
-
They look great @Anesthetist
-
Thank you gents, I’m really pleased with them. My go pairs have been my NoLot and pronto slubs (888) and compared to those pairs, the block is slimmer and the leg is fuller. Just getting used to a straight leg again but loving them more by the minute.
They are a welcome addition to the closet and my growing 634 collection (14oz OD & non selvedge 10th anniversary). I cant believe it took me this long to get a 634s but the extra details made it impossible to wait any longer.

I know how you feel. Picked up my first pair of 634s aftermarket about 8 months ago. 634 4LYFE now [emoji38]

@neph93 Funny you say that…I started with 634's thinking it would be the only cut that I could wear comfortably until the one day I tried a pair of 666's. Fell in love with them and wear them for months on end...Throw the 666's in the wash and pick up a pair of 634's and can't believe I haven't been wearing them for the last few months.
I keep going back and forth between them...now about the Beatle Busters...

I love the 666, when an iteration fits me. Generally the waist/thigh ratio doesn’t work, but now and again I hit the jackpot (IH-666L-19 and IH-666-UHR so far). The BB’s were great. Still have a pair in SBG that I adore but they need repairs. I’m feeling better but not sure I’m up to denim repairs just yet [emoji38]

I so want these based on the details but just don't think straight cuts are flattering on me.
-
I thought the same until I tried them on
-
@EdH:
I got an extra half inch out of the thigh measurement on my 21oz 888s
@EdH Interesting as I size by thigh measurement and use a belt. I also suffer from calf size issues - would you comment on the calves between 888 and 634 for the same tag size, please. I do have 888s, but now I am strongly considering 634s.

It's just a personal opinion, but I think straight cuts are the jam. For me, it's all in the cuff. I think they look fine uncuffed, but in my eyes, cuffs give em that classic look. I also feel they look best when cuffed to a length that lets em hang straight with no break. With that in mind, footwear comes into play a lot. I think they look best with boots.
Alright I'll quit yammering but viva straightlegs and I see no reason why you couldn't rock em @mclaincausey

straight cut vs slimmer cut also depends a lot on the shirt or top you're wearing. If it looks too big and loose on you, try a looser fitting tee and see where that gets ya. (assuming the size and fit of the jeans are correct)
-
Fit really is in the eye of the wearer. I have seen so many people of very similar build say of the same cut "best cut I've ever had", "just does not work for me", does not suit my build" etc etc. It's a personal thing, and what "the cut just does work for me" really means "I personally don't like me in it".

The 888 is a straight leg too isn’t it?
For me tapered leg feels like I’m dressing too young for my age.

@Jeanmoreau Actually the 888 is a tapered cut… https://www.ironheart.co.uk/content/our-cuts-jeans
TAPERED
Any jean with 777 or 888 in the model number. The 777 cut is also referred to as a “slim tapered” jean cut, similar to the 666 cut but slightly more tapered. The 888 is a slim cut jean with a higher rise and more taper from the knee to the cuff, giving a very flattering, modern, slim silhouette. The 888 cut looks great on most body types and also women/girls. Other tapered pants include our slim tapered 721 model chinos and relaxed tapered cargo pants, the IHDR-502. -
My first pair was 634S and I’ve had other pants in the cut like the SII and the OG cords (though the old cords really were quite slim by “634” standards). I can definitely wear them, but they don’t look as good as other cuts on me to me or more importantly to my wife. I’m a hemmer but that’s not really the issue. It’s how they look and considerations like how they work with footwear. I’m not going for a Marlon Brando thing even if I admire that look on others.
I did compare a size down of these to my 777N and it was reasonably close though, higher rise and about an extra inch through the thighs, knees, and cuff.
The other struggle is that there are UHRs in stock

I think 888 is as tapered as it gets in the IH world right? Loose top block, pretty tight cuffs… IH’s “carrot cut”
I got the Pronto slubs and not sure those will work either. Maybe I should grab some Annys and warehouse them along with those
I’m often surprised how different cuts look worn on different bodies. I don’t think “wow those look super tapered” when I see 777 or 666 on most people, they just look slimmer to me.
Giles is right though, what you think looks and feels good is what works. I can wear any of these cuts but those factors will vary.
-
I dont think that IH makes a cut that fits the carrot description but i maybe wrong. The 888 is tapered for sure but the leg opening is not as narrow as alot of the other brands out there. I wear tag 38 and a 8.5 to 8.7 hem width is not terribly narrow. Thats one of the reasons i love IH. They do not entertain those ridiculous hem widths..i mean a tag 38 with 14 inch thigh and 7.2 inch hem. Thats a carrot.

I often see some confusion between “regular” and “straight”, and “slim” and “tapered”. The assumption being that all tapered cuts are also slim, and all regular cuts are straight.
IH have a slim straight cut (666), and a regular tapered cut (888). Then there’s the 555 which many assume to be tapered but actually isn’t (it tapers sharply in the thigh but drops straight from knee to hem).

This resonates for sure. In my early 30’s I heard that tapered legs work for shorter inseams as the give an impression of greater length (ahem). That made sense to me and having a short inseam for my height I bought into it. While it maybe true to a degree, it is an exaggeration to say it makes a meaningful difference.
So I started as a 555 guy (which was always bordering on too tight in the thigh and knee). At the same time I have always loved straight legged, loose cargo pants. Add to this the fact that I saw folks on here with my build, wearing straight cuts and looking boss, and I was getting confused. I’ve now tried every IH cut and the one thing I know for sure is, that I’m 6ft tall, bulky and still have a 31” inseam. I also know that any cut can work if you like the aesthetics. That includes what else you wear with it, on your feet, on your top half, how you style the whole thing etc. etc.
