Introduce Yourself Here
-
Hey guys,
I’ve been a lurking here a long time and thought I should finally introduce myself. Somehow I feel comfortable here. Sorry if this is a little long. My story isn’t exactly typical, so I want to explain as much as I can, and include a few pictures.
In fact, I’ll go ahead and start with a picture.
Vintage AO, new loopwheeled IH tee, 301S, custom Chucks, 115 degrees outsideSo besides being devilishly handsome, I happen to have a disability. Or, more specifically, Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type II, a neuromuscular disease that falls under the umbrella of muscular dystrophy. I am one of Jerry’s Kids, for those of you familiar with the euphemism.
But that’s more of a preface than a complete description of myself. I have a degree in software engineering, although I don’t actively use it. Most of the stuff in that field bores me now. I also helped start a foundation that helps older individuals with neuromuscular disease. But I digress.
I’ve been privileged enough to be able to acquire a taste for a few of the finer things in life, albeit just a few. Iron Heart is definitely one of them. I appreciate quality. Not necessarily just the physical quality of the goods, which is unparalleled in this case, but the thought behind the product and the ethos of the brand. Iron Heart has it all.
Aside: A friend of mine, a fellow handi-capable individual, got me into raw denim. We each got a pair of Flat Heads (mine were BSPs from Self Edge). I was skeptical at first. Sitting in a chair all day, it’s not like I’m going to develop any “sick fadez.” Yet the quality was obviously astounding. I couldn’t really imagine anything better. I was wrong, naturally.
Aside to the Aside: Raw denim does have its benefits for me. I have poor circulation and I’m always cold. The heavier denim combats this. I’m even from Arizona. It was 115 degrees out today. I wore my 301S. It’s practical for me, which I think is really the whole point anyway (e.g. practical workwear).
I started buying IH shirts about 2 years ago. I was impressed. I was interested in the denim, but I was always afraid of the “Iron Hurt” moniker (which is total bullshit now that I understand that people on SuFu try to downsize ridiculously). Last summer I went to NY and visited SENY, which, for me, was like a trip to Mecca. Andrew and Allan were cool peeps.
I got to see a pair of 301s and was sold. I couldn’t believe how soft they were. The construction was fantastic. I got some as soon as my size was back in stock and never looked back. (I had to get 301s as I’m super skinny.)
My love for IH has only grown since, as has my collection of IH gear. My chair is fully equipped with the super black messenger bag, and I generally always have one piece of IH clothing on.
Repping IH at last year’s local MDA telethon with the -24. I think the jeans were BSPs.I don’t want to get sentimental here, but I enjoy getting up in the morning and putting on my Iron Heart. It gives me something to look forward to everyday. I get funny looks when I explain to people what Iron Heart is, but I like knowing my clothes come from people who love what they do. And I like knowing people like Giles and Haraki listen to, and care for, their customers. (I believe I was the first person to suggest the overdyed twill workshirt, AKA The Big Blue, although it might have already been in the works. Kinda cool.)
So I want to thank you guys - Giles, Haraki, Paula, and the Self Edge guys - for doing that voodoo that you all do so well.
Hopefully I’ll be around this forum more often.
Adam
I told you it’d be a long post.

^^^That is the best fucking post I've seen in a long time.

"Sitting in a chair all day, it’s not like I’m going to develop any “sick fadez.”I (and I'm sure many here) feel the same way as you about our IH, and have the same respect and dedication to this stuff.
Thanks for stating it so well...
(Also really dug this part)...

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I'm glad I could share my story and be accepted. I was always one of those "shy guys" that Giles referred to snatching up preorders and such. Dare I say, no longer?
I just got a new chair and I've been hoarding several sheets of IH stickers. I feel a little art project is in order. Pics will follow soon in the sticker thread.
