@SKT yup, he showers a lot of the great New Orleans drummers with love including him.
One of his hot takes is that Rush pivoted to blues to prog because it was easier
-
@SKT I’m guessing at some point we were talking about The Stones and I offered up the book, and I love the fact that you guys have been enjoying it. I’d be lying if I said I remember a lot of the specific references you guys are making,as I read it a while ago. I don’t think you need to be a drummer to enjoy it.
-
@Jett129 yeah you absolutely don’t need to be a drummer at all to get a lot of joy from the book. Just a music lover.
-
@GraemeE the writer of that book gives Levon his flowers. I swear I’m hurrying to get it to you haha
-
@anodyne so damn sad. Love him and his dad and his namesake. What a terrible loss.
Is your handle an Uncle Tupelo refeeence?
-
@mclaincausey Ha, you got me. Still listen to them ... got some good stuff out of Son Volt and Wilco as well, but UT was my band back in the day. I really can't get JTE off of heavy rotation these days though. Listening to a bunch of John McCauley/Deer Tick too.
-
@anodyne your in good company
Myself @SKT @popvulture and others all nerd out on the tupelo and it's offspring
-
@Jett129 that’s exactly how it happened and how I ended up with the book. Like @mclaincausey i used the book as a playlist generator and went down some blues/rock n roll/jazz paths that i had never musically traveled before. Love anything that inspires me to explore new music.
@GraemeE that’s a great video with Keltner. One of my favorite albums is John Hiatt’s “Bring the Family” which is basically a supergroup of Keltner, Nick Lowe on bass and Ry Cooder on guitar. I’m sure you know all that but some might not. Just incredible songwriting and musicianship that actually resonates more with me now that I’m older and a father.
-
@anodyne love your handle and welcome. I’m a huge fan of all those bands as well. I was in school in Columbia, MO during UT’s rise and got to see them live many times at The Blue Note, one of which was their next to last show before splitting. And I love JTE and Steve although I never got to see Justin in person.
-
@SKT I was only able to see Uncle Tupelo a couple times, right before the breakup. Coming from the Midwest (near Minneapolis), I was also a big fan of bands like Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, Soul Asylum, etc. Great time to be young. I was never able to see JTE live either and that's a major regret, as well as all the music he could have made.

Soul Asylum
@october-rust correct me if I'm wrong but your dad was the guitar player?
