The (Less intimidating) Watch Thread

@WhiskeySandwich I wasn't familiar with the style before receiving the gift... It was a bold call buying someone as particular as myself a watch without prior consultation, but I'm happy to say he nailed it.
It didn't strike me as particularly large to begin with, but just compared it to a Tissot watch I've had stored away meaning to get serviced, and it really is quite a unit!

Does anyone know Marathon watches? https://www.marathonwatch.com/collections/navigator-1
True milspec and made in Canada... I'm in love!
-
@jevans41 I don’t have hands on experience. But I’ve heard from lots of places about how good they are. True mil spec and the people who run the company seem to be cool. The Grey NATO podcast always shouts out Marathon.
-
@Danimal506 Good shout on the pod thanks, I'll check it out.
I forgot to mention they have Swiss movements too (auto & quartz)...

As I mentioned before, the guys on my favorite watch related podcast both love Marathon. Their recent episode is an interview with the President of the company. I figured I’d share it here:
“This week, with the Toronto Timepiece Show just days away, we thought it would be fun to finally have a chat with Mitchell Wein, President of Marathon Watch Company. Marathon is a Canadian-owned watch and accessory business that is known all over the world for supplying everything from watches to clocks and other gear to a variety of governments and military outlets. Mitchell talks about the history of Marathon in Canada and Switzerland, what it’s like to make the jump from government contracts to end-user commercial sales, and even the brand’s recent collaboration with Jeep – and something of a tease for an announcement that will be made for the Toronto Timepiece Show.”

@T4920 i happened by a store that stocked the Turtle, and tried one on again. It had the rubber strap on it and i was really surprised that it was extremely comparable to my 41.5mm Orient. I guess 3.5mm isn't much bigger, but the Seiko wears it a bit better. My only concern is kinda dumb - how would it be on a Nato strap, since I exclusively rock those and not a 2-piece. Might have to get one to find out....
-
@WhiskeySandwich I can see it looking great on a colour matched NATO strap, or even a black and white one to match the bezel!
-
@WhiskeySandwich Dive watches on Natos are awesome! The thickness might be annoying to some
-
This is personal pref, but I've never warmed up to NATO or similar fabric straps. They don't seem to balance the watch head comfortably, often don't have the right level of adjustment I want, and when they get wet, they stay that way for an annoyingly long time. Rubber (specifically isofrane) or a metal bracelet 100% on any dive watch for me.
-
My Casio Duro is quartz, so it helps keep it thinner. I can’t do a single pass strap, I can never seem to find the fit on them.
-
@pechelman I agree, it’s a bummer they raise the case from the wrist rather than allowing for a close fit, but I’m kind of a rough boy, and the added reliability of being able to break a spring bar and have the watch not fall to its death is priceless to me.
Edit: I do always remove the “keeper strap” to slim the profile. Just straight, pass-thru, one shotter.
-
@WhiskeySandwich, with the Isofrane strap i mentioned, you can get the same level of redundancy to a spring bar breaking by connecting one strap to the other with a piece of spectra or dacron or whatever you want. Fwiw, I've never lost or broken a spring bar, but I do either upgrade them to more robust ones or have screwed on strap lugs. I stopped running my isofranes this way a while ago, but still have some tied up this way from when i was doing a lot of diving, mtn biking, skiing, etc and can get a picture for you later if interested.

@goosehd Swatch stores are so fun!

The Garrard is being worn more than the Seiko SPB143 at the minute - taken me completely by surprise.
It’s not too big, it’s quite loud, and it’s got a nice bit of history to it.… Oh, and the only way to adjust the date is to manually wind through… no separate way of adjusting date. Initially frustrating, but now a quirk that I have grown to accept.

I splurged on a turtle finally. I love the shape and fit of these, and even though they’re a hair on the larger side, they wear well below their measurements. Unfortunately this has to be exchanged due to the typical alignment issues and some weird brushing errors. Hopefully I can get a good example when it comes in.
