Correct @Jett129 , it's this one: https://www.lavaldotaine.it/en/products/bitter-aperitivo-artigianale/#1 . I've found this one to complement the mezcal (or gin) better than Campari. And yes, equal quantities built in the glass.
-
@Jett129 and @Tago Mago, hope you don’t mind me jumping in. I haven’t played with mezcal but for classic gin negronis I’ve started using Rinomato Bitter Scuro instead of Campari. I think it’s an improvement, sticking with equal proportions.
-
@Tago Mago, usually Martini Riserva Speciale Rubino (but could be Antica Formula Carpano if I’m feeling flush). The gin varies a lot but I often revert to Juniper Green Trophy. Incidentally, this is the only gin I have tried that works for me in a bijou (green Chartreuse rarely plays nicely).
What gin do you usually go for?
-
@ARNC We've tried a number of different gins but ultimately we like the combination of Whitley & Neill with the above mentioned bitter and Gonzalez Byass Vermouth La Copa rojo. Even my Italian friend had to begrudgingly admit that he preferred that vermouth to Carpano Antica Formula.
Speaking of green Chartreuse: we first came to mezcal when I ordered a Mezcal Last Word at a cocktail bar. Another cocktail where mezcal works really well as a subsitute for gin.
-
@ARNC By all means please chime in. I'm definitely on a Mezcal journey,of sorts,as of late, which has definitely been inspired/instigated by some fellow Forum Members. I got really hungover/sick,many years ago, playing a drinking game that involved chugging gin. Therefore I've never had a traditional Negroni, but the thought of a cocktail that uses Mezcal has me intrigued. Can't imagine I'll be able to find any of the Compari substitutes that you guys use,but I should be able to get some really good sweet vermouth, and I have some awesome Mezcal. Will report back in a few days.
-
@Tago Mago good choice! In my limited experience, Whitley Neill combines well in most situations.
@Jett129 I can relate to this, but I realised that the consequences were mainly down to me, not the gin :D. I got turned on to the possibilities at a blind tasting at the Plymouth Gin distillery a few years ago.
Both - I'll have to look out for Mezcal when I'm out and about.

Hit up a spot in Southsea for the first time recently and had one of the best old fashioned's I've had in a while
by far and away superior to the shower of shite I paid £12 for in Dishoom in London. "Our artisan (the barmans words) take on a traditional old fashioned" I later found out it had 'bay leaf and green tea reduction' in
