Neighbors of mine did that a couple of years ago. If you're careful, you can make the trip surprisingly inexpensively. I say go for it.

Seul, looks like you were guest of honour at a bukkake party.
Thanks for that mental image.

Chris, interested to hear how this can be done inexpensively.
https://www.couchsurfing.org/ - heard good things, worth a consider.

i suggest www.airbnb.com for cheap sleeps with the locals. They have to maintain their rep so minimal creepage.

No sorry, and they are now east of here somewhere. But I think most airlines (at least the large ones with decent global network) do pretty good round the world deals.

Sorry, don't have a lot of details. I only talked about the trip with them once and they never came back to Houston afterwards (they did come back to the US, just moved to another town in Texas). I remember that they did the flexible ticket option for their flights. They were planning to work in a couple of countries where the regulations on employing non-citizens were less restrictive and staying with friends occasionally, as well. They also intended to stick to developing nations to keep expenses down. It sounded like there were lots of ways to tailor the trip to keep it reasonable, but it requires lots of flexibility in destinations and duration in each place. As I recall, they weren't even sure how long they were going to be gone, just shooting for somewhere between 12-14 months.
