Good run-about, would have been a trophy and worth anything only if the other team won it, now the media will rightly consider it a pre-season friendly which it of course is. City should have been several goals up by the half time if not for some Sterling-esque finishing by Sterling and Sane's injury was an unfortunate early turn of events, still an ok effort considering no Aguero, no Laporte and no Ederson. City could use a real left back as well, this trick of playing wingers and midfielders there for 2 seasons now has sort of lost its novelty. I don't agree with Pep's policy of no substitutions when it was obvious the midfield was playing with no legs in the 2nd half but apparently he wanted to "build up their conditioning".
One (non-)trophy in the bag then, roll on next weekend and the real stuff.

Thoughts on the upcoming season? @louisbosco
Is Harry Maguire worth 80m? Another United panic buy?
@neph93 Have Liverpool done enough in the transfer window?
-
I’ll answer that when the window closes… and again when the season’s over. I think Liverpool have gotten back to doing business quietly, so it wouldn’t surprise me if one or two more show up over the next day or two. That being said, Klopp has always maintained it would be quiet this summer.
I wouldn’t say no to another back as support for TTA and Robbo, but a healthy Gomez/Milner/Fabinho can all do a job there. Nor would I say no to an attacking midfielder but we were without Ox and Lallana for most of last season and barely used Shaq, so it isn’t like we’re ribbed for choice as it stands.
I’ll chip in re Maguire, it’s a good signing but he isn’t VVD. He won’t rejuvenate a dodgy back line on his own and then there’s the rest of the squad. Still seems like Utd lack a unifying plan to me.

i reckon the only reason why he's worth £80m is because he's holding an english passport. given any other EU passport, we'll pay much less. nonetheless citizenship aside, i do believe he can do well. he doesn't have to be VVD but this can be the start of OGS' rebuilding. thinking about the back 4: wan-bissaka, maguire, lindelof, shaw; is a very young back 4. if they do well this season, good on them. if not, they've got the couple years to gel together and make the class of
19922019.they've got a team worth challenging for something. definitely no panic buys this year. i've managed to meet the new boys last month, good bunch of humble lads.
-
@louisbosco I fear for OGS running out of ideas. Some truly awful performances from your lot at the end of last season.
@neph93 I agree and expect Liverpool to challenge City for the title again to be honest. If Arsenal can land Coutinho could give them some decent attacking options this season though
-
@AdamJ i don't think he's ran out of ideas. i felt that towards the end of the season, the team as a whole ran out of steam. this will be his first full season in charge and his own prep for pre season to change what he wants, implement his transfer and training policies and playing style. it's too early to judge him or to criticise him based on the half season he had last year..
-
@louisbosco I hope he does well! Nobody likes seeing chopping and changing of managers every season.
Hope Mason Greenwood can fill the void left by Lukaku..

rashford will fill the void left by lukaku. and greenwood will fill the void left by rashford. it's about time for a changing of guard..

@louisbosco Looks like you were right about Rashford stepping up to the mark.. albeit with the help of some questionable defending from Chelsea ::)
-
Having watched a little of all the games involving the big six I think Spurs comeback caught the eye the most. That being said, they were woeful in the first half against well organised but ultimately poor opposition.
Utd played the counterattack game to perfection against Chelsea but to be fair anyone would have rolled over that Chelsea team yesterday.
-
Agreed @neph93 , I think it said more about Chelsea's potentially tough season than United's strength.
Although no sooner had I hit "send" to my brother about Rashford constantly giving the ball away, had he won the penalty, scored it and proceeded to tear Chelsea apart on the counter - so what do I know?

you beat me to it. i was gonna say, i slept well last night. zouma was atrocious. but it's definitely a good start to the season!!
-
but it's definitely a good start to the season!!
i'm starting to hate this season already! @AdamJ
on another note, is any one here interested in doing fantasy league for shits and gigs? i feel like starting one for this forum just to see how competitive we can get…
-
@louisbosco Wasn't the best performance I must admit. Long season ahead yet though mate!
-
@louisbosco Still plenty of games to go

hahaha. i'm not giving up on them. it's just frustrating. they had their chances.. but never clinical enough to finish them.
