Anyone here play video games?

Aye the PS3 is an overall beast of a machine. I only hate these 2 things:
- regional Blue-Ray player (for fuck sake)
- not compatible with PS2 games (one model was, but they stopped making it very quickly realising less PS2s would sell)
Got to agree on the top one, it really is a pain in the arse that one and it's one i can see continuing as the studios will want it too and probably point out that most of them backed Blu-Ray in the early days so it will be payback.
My 'Fatboy' 60gb is the backwards compatible model and it does get used for LMA(SOMEONE PLEEEASE RELEASE A FOOTIE MANAGEMENT GAME SOON!!). The reason that backwards compatibility was stopped was simply cost. The JPN and US first release versions were fitted with the Emotion Engine chip that ran the PS2, but this proved too expensive so for the EU 60's emulators were used but these needed to be patched to cover recent and newer PS2 releases but STILL the cost of producing the 3 was too expensive so BCC was axed along with the card readers and a few USB ports. And for the record i'm not that keen on the finish of the PS3 or the fact they have done away with the "Spiderman" font for the PS wording, also the touch sensitive on/off/eject buttons should have been retained.

It's an absolutely horrid piece of design BUT I've grown to love it. Reminds me of some (sport)cars that everyone hated at start but became classics. Have you seen/ used the slim fit (to use jeans-terms) model?.. Lord oh lord… No thanks!..
But yeah... WTB: backwards compatible model!.. So I can play Snake Eater without re-connecting the whole thing...

I'm actually keen on getting a PS3 now LOL. A BluRay-player would be really something as I have a nice FullHD since christmas…
Do it man! If you are a movie fan then it's a no-brainer.
Oh should add that the PS3 is compatible with soon come 3D gaming too.

I love the original design, the (very slighty) see through black casing is brilliant if prone to fingerprints and scratching(coincidently, everyone i know including myself suffers from upper casing scratches that are unexplained). The only pluses for the slimline that i can think of are lighter to carry, more energy efficient, more Gb(easily upgraded on the old model though) and the fan runs quieter…..oh and Dualshock controller thrown in.

Blue-Ray's awesome - especially on my 42" full HD tv indeed!.. I saw The Dark Knight on it on BR disc as me first movie and almost pissed me pants!..
No joke here but The Dark Knight on my 40" X Series Sony was 10 times as good as what i saw in the theatres.
Thing is though there are poor(er) quality Blu-Ray's out there, these can be indentified easily by the grainy effect seen during playback. The only way to possibly tell before buying is if the film is cheap to buy new then probably it will be a rushed release, this is by no means a sure fire cert though.

Uncharted and the follow up are fcuking brilliant games, kind of like a Rick Dangerous/ Tomb Raider for the next gen consoles and both are very much worth buying…..as is God Of War 3 which will be my next pur-chase.
One thing i do not get all though is on update 3.20 they removed the option to run your PS with Linux, if you already had this as your op sys you were FORCED to remove it otherwise face up to the fact you would be unable to go online with your games etc. Pretty shit if you ask me.

I love that my PS3 can play AVI files…now I can download shows and movies and transfer the files via USB stick and not have to burn them to DVD or watch on my computer..
I just hooked up an external HD to my PS3… So yeah: I can download and play all the files I want. I do buy a lot of DVds though, but money's tight when you're an IH addict.

I think I may hold off for now, even though my love for Rockstar and anticipation for the new Red Dead Redemption (the sequel to Red Dead Revolver) will remain unsatisfied if I do. Decisions, decisions.

In problematic i take it you'd want Linux as your operating system yes? If so Shoque may have the answer.

I was certainly considering it, but it's more a reaction to the idiotic move by Sony. Sony specifically marketed the PS3 to be Linux developer-friendly and with the new update…well, it's a dick move.
Using Linux is really an immediate concern as I don't have much experience with it (some Ubuntu and some Slackware, much less active developement) and wouldn't really need it for the games I'd be playing. But if/when I decide to get a basic DAW going, I'll probably want to use a full Linux OS. But, again that's a long term plan. Hopefully shoque's has the inside track on something that works.

There's an Ubuntu tutorial: http://www.ps3news.com/forums/ps3-guides-tutorials/geohot-ps3-exploit-ubuntu-linux-guide-109811.html
I think you have to have firmware 3.15 or lower, otherwise it won't work. I'm not 100% sure though.
Let me know if it worked!
